Difficult-to-treat migraine is associated with a substantial economic burden

Migraine is one of the most common and disabling illnesses globally,1 and imposes a substantial economic burden.2

Migraine can be considered difficult-to-treat in patients who have an inadequate response to preventative therapies, psychiatric comorbidities or medication overuse.3 Migraine is most prevalent among adults during their most formative and productive years.1,2 Migraine attacks can impair an individuals’ ability to function, which in turn interferes with the conduct of daily activities including occupational responsibilities; resulting in a loss of work productivity.2,4 Psychiatric comorbidities are common amongst people with migraine, and can be associated with higher healthcare utilisation tendencies and medical costs.5,6 In addition, medication overuse and inadequate response to preventative therapies are also associated with significant resource utilisation and economic burden.4,7
